" Mexicans in New York City Lag in Education"

I felt like the whole article was written with insensitive language and was blunt about the situation without offering any type of solution to the problems it addresses. I also find it interesting that this is something "new" for New York... all of these problems have been noticed and going on for a very long time in California. It feels like New York is just catching up...

I think the article brings up a lot of stereotypes... And although there may be truth to every stereotype, this article is almost generalizing to EVERY Mexican Immigrant in New York drops out of school, work in restaurants or construction and are poor and illegal. These are some sentences that I found were hard to read:

"Many adults have demonstrated remarkable success at finding work, filling restaurant kitchens and construction sites, and opening hundreds of businesses."

"Many Mexicans are poor and in the country illegally. Parents, many of them uneducated, often work in multiple jobs, leaving little time for involvement in their children’s education."

"“They just give up,” said Karina Sosa, 22, a Mexican-American undergraduate at Baruch College and an education activist."

“You don’t think of nothing else but having fun with your friends, meeting up with girls, having your boys with you,” Mr. Lucero said. “The last thing you think of is school.”He was expelled when he was 18, while still in 10th grade. Most of his Mexican friends from high school also dropped out and entered the work force, and so did one of his younger brothers."

"Syndi Cortes, 19, one of five children of Mexican immigrants in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, said she dropped out after getting pregnant at 16. She had already been cutting most of her classes, she said, and so had most of her Mexican and Mexican-American friends."

There were a lot of things I found wrong with these sentence. The words "many" and "they" generalize and make the problem sound as if it is applied to every Mexican Immigrant in the nation. Also, the personal experiences will be remembered by many who read the article as sad and unfortunate. Although sad and unfortunate, it is also some of the worst case senarios. Free association could take place and people will think back to the article when looking at a "mexican looking" boy or girl and think they are in gangs, expelled from school, don't care about anything but friends, sex and getting pregnant..
